Verdict: Online Photo Scanner is very user-friendly.

It works like a real scanner and outputs scanned photos in PDF and Image format. Sumo's scanner spotted more outdated apps than the other two updaters I tested, but it's difficult to condone the company's practice of installing spyware and preselecting offers for other software you didn't ask for and probably don't want.

CNET's TechTracker software-update scanner shows the number of apps it's tracking and the number of updates available for those programs.

CNET's TechTracker shows the program's latest version, file size, number of downloads, and other information along with a link to any available updates. The TechTracker settings dialog lets you change the scan schedule from the default daily setting to manual, every four hours, weekly, or monthly.

Of the three preselected options to install unwanted programs along with Sumo, this one is the most difficult to spot to uncheck. The Sumo update scanner identified 13 out-of-date applications and has a Get Update button leading to the patch download.

SUMo not only searches for programs installed in the regular installation directory of your computer, as you can even add custom folders and files for it to scan, like if you have portable software stored on another hard drive.

A huge downside is that it doesn't provide links to the download pages for updates. Instead of providing a direct link inside the program, or even just linking to a download page, SUMo simply lets you search for the program on the internet, where you'll then need to find the download yourself, manually. We tested this program in Windows 10 and Windows 8 without any issues, so it should work in other versions, too, including Windows Actively scan device characteristics for identification.
